Lead Scoring
Lead scoring is the practice of ranking contacts by their likelihood to buy so a sales team knows who to call first. In visitor identification, the score is based on real-time browsing behavior, not on a form someone may or may not have filled out.
How it works in practice
Each identified visitor receives a score from 0 to 100 based on pages visited, session depth, scroll behavior, time on site, and return visits. The score updates as the visitor browses, so it reflects the current session, not a static snapshot. High scores trigger an alert so your team calls while the prospect is still on your site, before they click to a competitor.
What it is commonly confused with
It is commonly confused with static lead grading, which assigns a letter grade based on firmographics submitted in a form, like company size or job title. Behavioral scoring is different because it reflects what a person actually did on your site this week, not what they wrote in a form months ago. A grade is a guess about fit; a score is a measurement of intent.
Why it matters to a business owner
Without scoring, your team works a list in random order and the hottest prospects go cold while the team calls the coldest names first. With scoring, your team calls the highest-intent visitors first, while they are still comparing options, which is the difference between a same-day close and a voicemail never returned. Scoring is what turns a list of names into a prioritized workflow.
